ALYSSA Valdez and former Ateneo teammate Denden Lazaro join forces anew when they suit up for Bali Pure in the 13th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference unfolding on May 28 at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Fresh off a sterling UAAP career, Valdez banners a team made up of current and former Ateneo standouts, as well as reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player Gretchel Soltones in the eight-team tournament.
For a change, organizers are staging a separate opening ceremony tomorrow to formally introduce the teams.
Completing the eight-team roster are Pocari Sweat, KIA, Air Force, Baguio, Iriga City and collegiate squads National University and University of the Philippines.
Reinforced Conference titlist Cignal TV headlines the six-team cast vying in the second Spikers’ Turf season, the V-League’s all-men counterpart which also kicks off on May 28.
The women’s division offers plenty of subplots, particularly involving Valdez and Co. who rekindle their rivalry with former La Salle counterparts Michelle Gumabao and Melissa Gohing, who will play for Pocari Sweat.
Former Ateneo stars Dzi Gervacio and Bea Tan, Amy Ahomiro and Mary Mae Tajima are also in the Bali Pure squad which will also have Charo Soriano as playing coach. Karla Bello, Janine Marciano, Alyssa Eroa and Ivana Agbayani are also part of the team.
Pocari Sweat is tipped to give Bali Pure a run for the crown with an equally formidable roster bannered by Myla Pablo, Elaine Kasilag, Gyselle Sy, Siemens Dadang and Rossan Fajardo.
Pocari will be coached by Thai Tai Bundit, the mentor of Valdez and Lazaro at Ateneo.
“We’re expecting an exciting conference with these eight teams,” said Ricky Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision.
