Beckham’s LA Galaxy-Philippine Azkals clash in December mulled

MANILA, Philippines—An exhibition match pitting the Los Angeles Galaxy, featuring global football icon David Beckham, and the Philippine Azkals is being planned at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in early December.

The Galaxy, who play in the United States’ top-flight league Major League Soccer, are going on a tour of Southeast Asia and Australia with the Philippines reportedly among their destinations.

The match will be held either on Dec. 3 or 4.

Indonesia and Singapore have also been named as possible destinations of the team, before they fly to Australia for a match on Dec. 6.

Cathy Rivilla, one of the local coordinators who has been in touch with the California-based promoters of the Manila leg of the Galaxy tour, said LA galaxy president of operations Tom Payne is arriving in the country within the week to inspect the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Rivilla said Payne will be the one to announce if the match is pushing through.

“There are many factors that need to be considered. We will know in the next few days if the match is pushing through,”the Rivilla said.

Other notable players in the Galaxy squad are US national team star Landon Donovan and former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane.
