Phoenix has named Ariel Vanguardia as its new head coach on Tuesday, replacing Koy Banal.

Fuel Masters alternate governor Raymond Zorilla confirmed the move, saying that it was part of a long term plan for the team as they part ways with Banal.

“Phoenix Fuel Masters has appointed Ariel Vanguardia as its new head coach,” he said. “This is in consonance with the long term plan of building an exciting and new team which is likewise in line with the marketing programs of the company. We are grateful for the efforts and professionalism of coach Banal and the rest of the staff and we wish them well in their future endeavors.”

Vanguardia has yet to issue a statement on his appointment, but has posted a short message on Facebook: “God makes dreams come true! #blessed”

He will be tasked to lead the squad in the season-ending Governors’ Cup, set to start in July.

Phoenix also went to the trade market and sent seldom-used wing James Forrester to NLEX for shooter John Wilson.

The moves will reunite Vanguardia and Wilson in the Fuel Masters camp after their time in the collegiate level in Jose Rizal University.

Phoenix finished its inaugural conference 11th with a 3-11 record in the recently concluded 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
