Soriano-Tan pairing heads PH bid in beach volley

BEACH Volleyball Republic standouts Charo Soriano and Bea Tan will banner the country’s bid against a strong international field in the BVR Invitational from June 9 to 12 at Anguib Beach in Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

Tan, who ruled the BVR National Tournament together with Fiona Ceballos, will partner with Soriano this time in the first international meet organized by the fledgling beach volleyball tour.

Jennifer Cosas and Dij Rodriguez, the the BVR National Finals runner-up, are also in the field that boasts of teams from Brazil, Singapore, United States, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

“We started BVR with the vision of having a team to represent the country at the international level,” said Soriano. “This tournament is a stepping stone for us.”

The 12 teams were divided into four pools in the draw conducted Monday by tournament director Tony Boy Liao.

Cosas and Rodriguez are in Group A with the Brazilian pair of Mimi Amaral and Bruna Figueredo and Singapore’s Tan Shang Theng and Ong Wei Yu, while Tan and Soriano are in Group B along with United States’ Jennifer Snyder and Chara Harris and Kong Cheuk-yee and To Wing-tung of Hong Kong.

Group C has Yupa Phojongploy and Rachel Sherman, Brazil’s Erica Adachi and Rupia Inck and Singapore’s Rachel Ting and Eliza Huy, while Group D has Alexa Micek and Leah Hinkey, New Zeal-and’s Julia Tilley and Alice Bain and Hong Kong’s Lo Wai-yan and Yueng Yuk-mei.
