Counting earlier rounds of 70 and 72, the 59-year-old real-estate developer tallied 217 over 54 holes and, as a bonus for his brilliant effort for the week, will get to lead the Philippine squad in the Asia Pacific Confederation tournament slated here later this year.
“I’m very happy with the win, of course, but more importantly, for the chance to again play for the Philippines in the As-Pac (tournament),” Avena told the Inquirer while celebrating with friends after his victory.
“I had such a big lead and played relaxed the whole round,” Avena said after a 37-38 effort. “There was no use taking risks.”
Allan Alegre finished second after a 79, with Canlubang golf manager Rolly Viray checking in third, another two back after a 78, in the tournament sponsored by MVP Sports Foundation and held as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Tour and backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.
“I’m just excited to play (in the As-Pac),” said Avena, a standout of Canlubang in the PAL Interclub.
The continental tournament will be played at Alabang Golf Club in November.
Gerald Katigbak shared the limelight with Avena by winning the accompanying Mid-Am Championship after shooting a 78 for 232 and a two-shot victory over Richard Salcedo (79).
