Petron, RC eye share of Superliga top spot

A SHARE of the lead is at stake when league favorites Petron and RC Cola-Army tangle with separate foes today in the Philippine Superliga All Filipino Conference women’s volleyball at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Petron, the rebooted defending champion, will test Generika at 2 p.m., while four-time champ RC Cola-Army face Cignal at 4 p.m., hoping to match idle F2 Logistics’ 2-0 start.

The Tri-Activ Spikers are trying to strike it on their own minus the big stars they had when they swept their way to the crown last year.

Now, they are relying on second round overall pick CJ Rosario, Ces Molina and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, all of them low-key operators who proved successful during their debut against the Foton Tornadoes in the opener.

Coming from defeat

But Petron will face a battle-ready Generika which is coming from a defeat to Foton after winning its first game over Standard Insurance.

With a mixture of college stars still trying to get used to playing together, the Lifesavers put up a decent fight before losing to the Tornadoes in four sets last Thursday.

“The heart is there, the talent is there,” said Generika coach Francis Vicente. “We are slowly getting there, and facing Petron is a big challenge for us.”

The Lady Troopers will bring the cavalry against the HD Spikers, who are aching to gain traction after opening with a loss.

Rachel Anne Daquis, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Honey Royse Tubino and Tina Salak gear up for RC Cola-Army which, according to coach Emilio “Kungfu” Reyes, still lacks direction.

“We have to get a notch higher,” said Reyes.
