Men’s 2nd round at Wimbledon finally completed

LONDON — Two days later than normal, the men’s second round at Wimbledon was finally finished off by Alexander Zverev on Saturday.

The 24th-seeded German beat Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, completing the fifth set after rain suspended the match on Friday.

The weather has been a real problem at Wimbledon this week, and organizers have decided to play on the middle Sunday for only the fourth time in the tournament’s 139-year history.

In the women’s tournament, there was still one second-round match still to be completed. Two-time champion Petra Kvitova and Ekaterina Makarova were on court.

Three-time champion Novak Djokovic was also trying to complete his third-round match against Sam Querrey.

The American won the first two sets on Friday, but Djokovic won the third on Saturday.

Querrey is threatening to end Djokovic’s bid for a true Grand Slam. Djokovic has won the past four major titles, but no man has won them all in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969.

Also in action is 2013 Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, who will try to join Roger Federer in the fourth round.

There are also three Wimbledon women’s runners-up on the schedule: Agnieszka Radwanska, Sabine Lisicki, and Eugenie Bouchard.
