PSC to NSAs: Fund your own events for now

NATIONAL sports associations (NSAs) with pending financial requests from the Philippine Sports Commission must temporarily spend their own money to support their programs.

Reason: The four new commissioners of the sports-financing agency have yet to secure their official appointments from Malacañang, and thus cannot release government funds.

“Some of the NSAs have already spent their own money to fund their programs,” said incoming PSC commissioner Celia Kiram during yesterday’s interview on Sports Radio 918.

She was referring to the Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation, which brought the national team to the 2016 ICF Junior U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

“As long as the program was submitted and budgeted by the PSC, there’s no reason for it to be disapproved,” said Kiram.

The Triathlon Association of the Philippines also shelled out about P3 million to fund the overseas stints of the national triathletes.
