FAR EASTERN University made St. Benilde look nowhere near like champions.
Showing full control from the get-go, the Lady Tamaraws blasted the Lady Blazers in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18, in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference Monday at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Bernadeth Pons unloaded eight attacks in an 11-point performance to power the Lady Tamaraws to a surprisingly easy victory over the reigning NCAA queens.
“I’m just happy we won our first game,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos. “We had good execution of our plays. But of course, we must continue to practice.”
Toni Basas, who sealed the match with an attack, and Remy Palma fired 10 points each in the game where the Lady Tamaraws built double-digit leads right in the first set.
“We just enjoyed the game,” said Pons after the Lady Tamaraws joined opening-day winners University of the Philippines and San Sebastian for the early lead.
The FEU men’s team, though, didn’t get as lucky in its first assignment as the National University Bulldogs tripped the Tamaraws, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23, in the Spikers’ Turf Season 2 Collegiate Conference.
Bryan Bagunas and Francis Philip Saura teamed up for 22 points for the Bulldogs.
University of Santo Tomas also cruised past National College of Business and Arts, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13, behind Arnold Bautista Jr.’s 14-point outing.
FEU and UST joined first-day winners La Salle and UP on top.
