GENERIKA outlasted Cignal, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-7, last night to settle for fifth place in the Philippine Superliga All Filipino Conference women’s volleyball at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The Life Savers found an answer in everything the HD Spikers threw at them, but really pressed it on in the fifth and deciding set to rule Group B composed of the last four teams in the tourney.

Gen Casugod and Wensh Tiu stepped up when the going got rough, scoring 20 and 12 points, respectively, for Generika.

Earlier, Standard Insurance-Navy made sure it won’t finish the conference in the tailend by beating Amy’s Kitchen, 25-13, 25-17, 19-25, 25-9.

The Corvettes thus finished seventh, while the Amy’s Spikers wound up eighth and last.

Seasoned spiker Pau Soriano accounted for eight points for the Corvettes who had a strong start but held their punches in the third to allow the Perpetual Help-powered Amy’s to snatch a set.

Hezzymie Acuna and Carissa Martinez delivered 10 points each.

Standard Insurance-Navy coach Nene Chavez said her wards gained rich experience in seeing action in the league.

“We gained something playing the best volleyball players in the country,” she added. “Who knows, maybe things would be better next conference.”

Chavez, who was part of the national team that won its last Southeast Asian Games gold in 1993, said her team only found its groove late in the tourney.
“We started to play well in the second round,” she said. “But it’s okay. I told the team that the important thing is that we learned something and we enjoyed every single game.”

Lourdes Clemente and Jowie Verzosa finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Amy’s.
