Toni Rose Basas has been tearing it up lately for Far Eastern University in the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference, but the incoming third year student is still learning how to handle the added responsibility of being a go-to player.

“Hindi pa po,” said Basas laughing when asked if she’s used to being a team leader. “Hindi pa masyado pero pinipilit naman ako ni coach [Shaq Delos Santos] na masanay kasi isa na nga ako sa mga inaasahan ng team.”

FEU still has veterans Bernadeth Pons and Remy Palma but the two have gladly shared the spotlight with their younger teammate and Basas did not disappoint in their Saturday’s game against University of the Philippines.

Basas produced a game-high 24 points in their five-set win against the Lady Maroons, 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8.

After four games, Basas has averaged a solid 18 points per game for FEU.

Despite her new workload with the team, Basas said she’s still a laidback player and she doesn’t do any extra training when their daily practices are over.

“Kung ano meron sa training yun lang, kasi after ng practice papasok na ako sa klase,” said Basas who is still attentive even if Delos Santos scolds her in training.

“Think positive lang ako kahit na pinapagalitan ako sa training kasi para sakin magagamit ko yun sa game.”
