Foton Pilipinas is ready to take on Asia’s best clubs.

That’s the prognosis of Italian coach Fabio Menta of the Tornadoes who finally nailed a win after three starts in the Select Tuna Thailand Volleyball League.

The squad, prepping for the Sept. 3 to 11 Asian Volleyball Confederation Women’s Club Championships, defeated Rangsit University, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20, Friday at Wi Sommai gymnasium in Sisaket Province, Thailand.

Menta said he’s satisfied with the way Foton Pilipinas played so far, saying the team “played point by point with Asia’s best,” referring to league defending champion Bangkok Glass.

The Filipinas first bowed to Bangkok Glass (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25) before EPA Sisaket dealt them a second loss (13-25, 10-25, 18-25).

But Menta, who’s had stints as mentor for the Cuba and Cook Islands national teams, said the results of the Thai tourney won’t mean that much because they are just testing the club’s mettle.

“They showed great personality on the court,” he added.  “We adjusted the block positions so we can be there in defense.”

The team is backstopped by Americans Lindsay Stalzer and Ariel Usher, who join the Foton core featuring Angeli Araneta and Cherry Rondina as well as Philippine Superliga reinforcements like Aby Maraño and Jen Reyes.

Starting middle spiker Jaja Santiago and Jovelyn Gonzaga weren’t able to join the tournament and training camp but will make up the AVC club to be held in Biñan, Laguna.

“I am very satisfied with the team,” said Menta, who is facing a tough challenge of meeting the expectations of the team which is at least a semifinal finish.  “All players have performed according to game plan. We were very happy.”
