Tabuena 8 shots off Omega lead

FILIPINO Olympian Miguel Tabuena rebounded from a disastrous start and stayed in the running to make weekend play in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, rescuing a two-over-par 72 at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, Crans Montana yesterday.

American Paul Peterson birdied four of his last five holes to shoot a 64, the same output of Mike Lorenzo-Vera of France, as they took one-stroke lead over a big bunch of veteran internationalists in the $3 million event.

The 21-year-old Tabuena teed off at the back side and dropped five strokes in a three-hole stretch from No. 11, including a triple bogey 6 on the 13th that slowed him down considerably on a day of torrid scoring.

Reigning Masters champion Danny Willett of England signed for an eagle 3 on the ninth and returned a 65 to lead the big group that will chase Peterson in today’s second round.

Big-hitting Aussie Scott Hend, Denmark’s Joachim Hansen and Frenchman Julien Quesne were among those who carved out 65s. Musong R. Castillo
