UST’s rich history in full display as UAAP Season 79 kicks off

The 79th Season of the UAAP officially opened Saturday night at the Plaza Mayor inside the University of Santo Tomas campus in Sampaloc, Manila.

It was a grand celebration, contrary to what was said to be a simple event, featuring the historical essences of Asia’s oldest university through a festive gathering of students from all member schools.

Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy formally opened the games, followed by a grandiose pyromusical as fireworks splattered the sky hovering the iconic Main Building.

Student-athletes from the participating schools passed through the historic Arch of the Centuries, a National Cultural Treasure, in a parade leading to the Plaza Mayor, which served as an internment camp during World War II.

A ballroom formation competition was held earlier to kickoff the three-part opening where University of the Philippines ruled the demonstration sport.

An official theme song titled “Dare to Dream” was also performed by the all-student UST Symphony Orchestra.

Louie Vigil, captain of the UST men’s basketball team, led the Oath of Sportsmanship.

A “Dare to Dream” concert capped off the festivities.
