BIÑAN—Vietnam opened up its campaign with a five-set thriller over host Philippines, 25-18, 19-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-8, Sunday in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Asian Women’s Club Championship at Alonte Sports Arena here.

Foton Pilipinas Tornadoes shot themselves in the foot with consecutive errors when it mattered most to slip to 1-1 in Group A.

Thongtin Lien Viet Post Bank, the Vietnamese representatives, is now at 1-1 to lead the group while Hong Kong is last at 0-1.

“I’m happy with the team, all of the players played good,” said Vietnam head coach Van Long Pham.

Foton Pilipinas played without Lindsay Stalzer, who was nursing back problems even before the tournament started.

Team captain Do Thi Minh led Vietnam with 29 points while Tran Thi Thao and Linh Tran Ton Nu Ly also did some damage with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Ariel Usher led the Tornadoes with 20 points while Jovelyn Gonzaga and Jaja Santiago added 16 and 13 points, respectively.
