Former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has signed a minor-league deal with the New York Mets as he aims to pursue a career in baseball, it was confirmed Thursday.
The 29-year-old former Heisman Trophy player — who has not played for an NFL team since being released by the Philadelphia Eagles after their pre-season in 2015 — is hoping to switch sports to baseball.
He held a workout in Los Angeles on August 30 attended by 46 scouts from professional baseball teams, even though he has not played the sport since 2005.
Under the terms of his Mets deal, Tebow will report to the one-month instructional league in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
It follows meetings last week with five teams, with the Atlanta Braves reportedly heading the list of teams discussing a contract.
Only two of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams – the Chicago Cubs and the Oakland Athletics – did not attend his open workout at the University of Southern California.
Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy during a successful college football career at the University of Florida.
He was chosen as a first-round draft pick in 2010, inspiring Denver to a playoff win after only his second pro season.
However his career fizzled after spells with the New York Jets and the New England Patriots, before he was released by the Eagles in 2015.
