New-look Gilas Pilipinas blew an early double-digit lead to drop a 91-83 decision to a much-improved India at the start of the 2016 Fiba Asia Challenge early Saturday morning (Manila time) in Tehran, Iran.
The young Philippine team fell short, but put up an admirable fight, giving the bigger and seasoned India side all it could handle.
The Filipinos zoomed to a 12-2 start, but the Indians’ experience and size advantage made all the difference as the game went on.
Yet, the Philippines, composed of an all-amateur team, found itself ahead, 75-74, after an undergoal stab by CJ Perez with 4:40 left before India responded with a 17-5 blast to put the game away, 91-80.
Former Far Eastern University star Mac Belo led Gilas’ gallant stand with 21 points while ex-University of Santo Tomas guard Ed Daquioag added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Gilas got out-rebounded, 55-47, and was outscored 52-33 in the middle quarters.
Amjyot Singh was a man among boys as he dominated the undersized Gilas squad with game-highs 24 points and 18 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes.
Veteran guard Vishesh Bhriguvanshi also logged 40 minutes and produced big numbers for India with 20 points and six rebounds while also providing stability for India.
The Philippines takes on Chinese Taipei next on Sunday.
