Calvin Abueva flirted with a 20-20 game and Alaska steamrolled Phoenix, 103-87, in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.
Abueva was all over the place, collecting 18 points, 21 rebounds, one steal and a block in just over 21 minutes for the Aces, who are stretched their winning streak to three games and improved to 5-5.
“I kind of felt it last game and I felt it again this time that my team is back,” said Alaska head coach Alex Compton, whose team started the conference at 1-4. “You saw the effort coming off a very short break. I felt like we’re back. “
“Today, the defense was superb and the effort was across the board,” Compton added.
Eugene Phelps had 34 points and 24 rebounds for the Fuel Masters, who had their three-game winning run snapped as they slid to 5-5.
Phelps came to play. The only problem for Phoenix was it failed to get some production from its locals.
The Aces, on the other hand, had six players in double-figures led by RJ Jazul’s 19 points. LaDontae Henton didn’t have his usual offensive game, going 6-of-20 from the field, but did his work on the glass with 20 rebounds.
With the victory, Alaska also pulled the plug on Star and GlobalPort’s quarterfinals’ bid.
