PH paddlers world champs again

THE PHILIPPINE team fought off jetlag and the biting weather to snatch the world title in the 20-crew senior mixed 500-meter event in the ICF World Dragon Boat Championships in Moscow.

The Filipinos timed one minute and 55 seconds, nipping favorites Russia, Thailand and Ukraine by a split second in the frigid waters of Krylatskoe, Russia’s Olympic racing course.

The Filipinos earlier settled for the silver medal in the 10-crew junior mixed 500m behind Russia and the bronze in the 10-crew senior mixed 500m.

Canoe-kayak specialists Hermie Macaranas and Ojay Fuentes spearheaded the seasoned crew of Filipino paddlers who also won two gold medals in a highly competitive meet in Taiwan recently.

“We’re tired after the long trip, and the 10-degree temperature made it even harder for us,” said coach Len Escollante.

Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation president Jonne Go said they would vie for the gold in three more events, including the 10-crew junior and senior mixed 2,000m, where the Filipinos have strong teams.

Other members of the team: Sheryl Caang, Rosalyn Esguerra, John Frias, Alex Generalo, Glaiza Liwag, Oliver Manaig, Reymart Nevado, Daniel Ortega, Jonathan Ruiz, Christian Urzo and siblings Paul and Michael Silencio, Robin Santos, Angela Avanila, Patricia Bustamante, Jordan De Guia, Maribeth Caranto, Fernan Dungan, Franc Feliciano, Rea Glore, Roger Masbate, Fe Niuda, Rhea Roa and Robin Santos.
