La Salle edges UE, UP gets first win in UAAP women’s basketball

La Salle halted University of the East’s four-game winning run, even as University of the Philippines entered the win column Wednesday in the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Khate Castillo had 21 points and nine rebounds, Camille Claro added 17 points and six assists, while Snow Penaranda had a double-double effort of 11 points and 10 boards as the Lady Archers nipped the Lady Warriors, 74-72.

With its fifth win in six matches, De La Salle stayed within reach of reigning two-time champion National University, which is unbeaten in four starts.

The Lady Maroons edged Ateneo, 42-40, in the other match, with JV Bautista sinking the game-clinching freethrows.

Daphne Esplana, Patricia Pesquera and Jeanine Bautista combined for 24 markers for UP,  which got its first win after four straight defeats.

The Lady Eagles, who drew 10 points apiece from Hazelle Yam and Jonette Uy De Ong, dropped to 2-4.
