Armed with a wealth of experience, the Jet Spikers, who ruled the AFP Olympics recently, are the heavy picks in the 6 p.m. clash with the Tigresses, the six-time champions who will be joining the reinforced conference for the first time.
“We are working double-time to win another title,” said coach Jasper Jimenez, whose squad will be led by Joy Cases, Judy Caballejo and Dell Palomata. “The initial target is to reach the Final Four.”
Using the tournament as a buildup for the UAAP wars early next year, The Tigresses will be bannered by EJ Laure, Cherry Rondina, Ria Meneses, Chloe Cortez and RJ Rivera.
Pam Lastimosa returns from a knee injury to provide depth and firepower for the Tigresses.
“We have nothing to lose but everything to gain,” said Tigresses assistant coach Ian Fernandez.
The Jet Spikers also hope to atone for the disappointment in the Open Conference finals where they bowed to Pocari Sweat in three games.
Laoag, boasting a retooled lineup, collides with Philippine Coast Guard in the curtain raiser at 4 p.m.
The Power Smashers secured the services of San Sebastian mainstays Grethcel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa, who are expected to provide defensive solidity and offensive sock.
“We are looking forward to an exciting third conference,” said Ricky Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision. “While foreign players could dominate, we also expect our local players to measure up, all in top form owing to our year-long three-conference calendar.”
