Cignal bucked the loss of injured import Lynda Morales to turn back Generika, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 15-4, Tuesday and post its first win in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Puerto Rican Olympian sprained her left ankle in the first set and was sat out the rest of the match. Her absence created a void in the rotation but allowed the locals to step up.
“That’s what I want to happen. I told the players forget Lynda is hurt. Don’t rely on anybody but yourself,” said Cignal coach Sammy Acaylar.
Janine Marciano accounted for 17 points, while Laura Schaudt, Mylene Paat and Micmic Laborte added nine points each for Cignal which climbed out of the rut with 1-2 record.
“All we need is one win and we’re up. I know my players are good. We can still rise,” added Acaylar.
The Lifesavers drowned to their fifth defeat in as many games despite 14-point outputs of import Darlene Ramdin and Ria Meneses.
