NCAA volleyball: Lady Stags withstand Lady Knights

San Sebastian survived a gritty Letran, 28-26, 25-14, 24-26, 24-26, 15-7, to claim a share of the lead with defending champion St. Benilde NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament Friday.

Back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones struggling got help from Joyce Sta. Rita and three others in scoring as the Lady Stags came away with their third straight win.

Sta. Rita and Soltones each had 15 points while Nikka Dalisay and Dangie Encarnacion added 12 points and Katherine Villegas 11.

San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb, however, was far was satisfied with his wards’ latest victory after letting it reach five sets.

“It’s a simple case of overconfidence that it almost cost us the game,” said Gorayeb. “This is a single-round robin elimination and all the games here matter. Every game is a championship game.”

It was another heartbreaking loss for the Lady Knights, who absorbed their third straight five-set defeat after losses to Lyceum and St. Benilde.

Meanwhile, San Sebastian made it a twin victory over Letran with a 16-25, 25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 15-13 triumph in the men’s side.
