A familiar face is returning to Mendiola.
Boyet Fernandez will make his comeback as he will be tapped to lead San Beda anew this NCAA Season 93.
Chief patron Manny V. Pangilinan has already approved the move, paving the way for the reunion between the multi-titled coach and the school.
“The team’s request was forwarded to boss MVP and he approved it,” said an official from the MVP camp who requested anonymity. “MVP sees coach Boyet as the best choice.”
According to the source, Fernandez and the Red Lions camp have been in talks since last Tuesday, immediately after former head coach Jamike Jarin resigned from his position. Jarin is set to take over the post left by Eric Altamirano in the National University Bulldogs.
The 45-year-old needs no introduction to the school, as he coached San Beda to back-to-back titles in NCAA Season 89 and 90 to complete the school’s five-peat in 2014.
He left for NLEX in the PBA before he was relieved from the post taken over by coach Yeng Guiao this offseason.
Pangilinan approved the request on Wednesday, with San Beda rector Fr. Aloysius Maranan, OSB now awaiting the formal proposal from the MVP camp. A formal meeting is yet to be scheduled due to the holiday break.
Fernandez is set to inherit a San Beda squad bannered by Mythical Team member Donald Tankoua, Javee Mocon, Davon Potts, and AC Soberano for next season.
