Petron began its massive buildup in a big way, acquiring popular middle blocker Mika Reyes.
The transfer involves the biggest name so far in what is expected to be a frenzied player movement in the Philippine Superliga offseason.
“Coming in to Petron, I [will] consider myself a newbie,” said the 22-year-old Reyes. “I’ll just make sure to be a very good player, blend with my teammates and give my full cooperation and trust to my new coach.
“They can expect a persevering Mika out there trying her best to be better as a player and as a person. I hope they grow with me in this new journey.”
Reyes signed her contract Wednesday at San Miguel Corporation offices in the presence of SMC sports director Alfrancis Chua and manager Charlie Dy.
Reyes’ presence will beef up the Tri-Activ Spikers’ frontline, which lost CJ Rosario, who last year decided to pursue a career as a flight attendant.
Reyes is also expected to add glitter to the franchise, which has produced such stars as Gretchen Ho. It also swept its way to the 2015 All-Filipino crown with a powerhouse lineup that included Aby Maraño, Rachel Anne Daquis and Dindin Manabat.
The 5-foot-11 Reyes, who was part of the FIVB Women’s Clubs, helped F2 Logistics win the All-Filipino Conference last year along with La Salle teammates Ara Galang and Kim Fajardo.
Petron is also reportedly wooing veteran setter Rhea Dimaculangan and University of Santo Tomas middle blocker Ria Meneses.
