Record triumph for Thomas; Tabuena way below

Olympian Miguel Tabuena closed out with a second straight two-over-par 72 and finished tied for 64th in the PGA Tour’s Sony Open, ruled in record fashion on Sunday by 23-year-old Justin Thomas at Waialae in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Tabuena couldn’t find the rhythm that had him taking an eight-under card into the last two days and lost a lot of ground in the last stop of the PGA Tour’s Hawaiian swing where Thomas posted the lowest 72-hole total in history.

Closing out with a 65 and touched off by only the eighth 59 in the PGA, Thomas tallied 253 which eclipsed Tommy Armour’s Texas Open record in 2003 by a shot.

Thomas, who also won the Tournament of Champions last week in Kapalua, joined Ernie Els as the only players to sweep Hawaii. The “Big Easy” pulled off the trick in 2003 and tallied 47-under for his two weeks. Thomas was two better.—MUSONG R. CASTILLO
