Philippine Sports Institute national training director Marc Edward Velasco announced yesterday plans to create a pool of athletes with a height requirement of at least six feet—and ready to play any sport.
“Imagine if we can have a swimmer who is 6-foot-3 or 6-4 or a track and field sprinter standing at least 6-5,” said Velasco. “Who knows, we can win medals in the Olympics with these types of athletes.”
Velasco said the national sports associations could tap athletes from the PSI pool of 6-footers, who will be trained to possess a general skill set.
“He can be a swimmer or a volleyball player. He can even be a rower once the rowing association asks for a six-foot athlete,” said Velasco. “They can be extremely good in other sports that require length and athleticism.”
