Jerwin Ancajas is ready to take on the world’s best super flyweights, including the fearsome Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, to prove his mettle.
The 25-year-old southpaw, who holds the International Boxing Federation 115-pound title, said becoming the best meant taking on the best pound-for-pound fighter today.
Gonzalez has a record of 46-0, with 38 KOs, and is the current super flyweight king of the World Boxing Council.
“He’s No. 1 in our division, so if I’m to be asked I’d like to fight Roman Gonzalez,” said Ancajas in the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Phoenix Golden Hotel in Pasay City Tuesday.
The native of Panabo City, Davao del Norte, retained his crown in Macau on Sunday by stopping Mexican Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.
Complaining of a shoulder injury, the challenger failed to come out for round eight.
Ancajas said he had Rodriguez all figured out early in their 12-round fight at The Venetian.
“Coach Joven (Jimenez) told me to first use the jab,” said Ancajas, who brought with him his title belt during the session. “Then when I got the distance, I executed our plan.”
Ancajas, who fights under the Manny Pacquiao Promotions, said he’ll continue training even if no opponent is in the horizon yet for him.
He’ll relish the opportunity though, if given the chance to be included in the undercard of Pacquiao’s title defense of his World Boxing Organization welterweight belt on April 23.
Ancajas arrived in the country Monday accompanied by Jimenez and sparring partner Drian Francisco. —ROY LUARCA
