De La Salle University opened its title retention bid with a sweep of Far Eastern University, 29-27, 25-22, 25-23, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Lady Spikers head coach Ramil De Jesus said some of his players have to adjust to their roles and that they have to fill in the gap his graduates Ara Galang and Mika Reyes left.

“This is the team I’ve built but some of my players still have to find their roles,” said De Jesus. “They’re still adjusting but it’s still a blessing that we won today.”

Offensive production was almost similar for both teams with FEU taking a slim 31-30 advantage in spikes and outscoring La Salle, 7-4, in service aces.

La Salle was better at holding its fort as the Lady Spikers scored seven blocks, three more than FEU’s four.

FEU, though, committed 38 errors and that proved costly in a neck-and-neck match.

Mary Joy Baron led La Salle with 15 points while Kim Dy added 11.

Bernadeth Pons had 12 points to pace FEU.
