University of the East bolstered its bid for another championship double in the UAAP Season 79 fencing tournament after hauling several gold medals Friday at UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.
The five-peat seeking Red Warriors are leading the way in the men’s division with three golds, one silver and two bronzes, while the Lady Warriors, gunning for a 10th straight crown, have a 2-2-2 gold-silver-bronze haul.
Former MVP Nathaniel Perez and CJ Concepcion won golds in the men’s individual foil and individual saber events, while the men’s team sabre of Perez, Concepcion, Bien Gonzales and Malcolm Valeña also emerged victorious.
Another former MVP, Justine Gail Tinio, topped the women’s individual foil category while the women’s foil squad of Tinio, Allaine Cortey, Johanna Castillo and Wilhelmina Lozada also bagged the gold.
Trailing UE in the men’s division is University of Santo Tomas with 1-2-1, while University of the Philippines comes in third with a 0-1-2 haul.
Noelito Jose gave the Growling Tigers the gold in men’s individual epee.
Ateneo is in second spot in women’s division with 1-1-2, while UST has a 1-0-0 tally in third place.
Lady Eagle Andrea Ignacio captured the gold in women’s individual epee while Tigress Maylene Pailma ruled the women’s individual saber.
The Junior Warriors’ are also lording it over in the boys (3-1-2) and girls (3-3-0) side in the high school division.
