Que soars ahead with two eagles

Lifted by a pair of eagles, Angelo Que flew away from the field in the ICTSI Anvaya Cove Invitational in Morong, Bataan, on Friday.

Taking advantage of the windless spell at Anvaya Cove Golf and Sports Club, Que eagled the par four No. 3 and par five No. 10 en route to a six-under 66 in the third round and an imposing seven-stroke lead over Japanese Toru Nakajima heading into the final round Saturday.

Combining power hits, superb iron game and solid putting, Que negated opening and closing bogeys to tally nines of 32-34 and post an 11-under 205 total that virtually assured him of the P650,000 champion’s purse.

Only Nakajima, with a second straight 72 and a 212 total, has a minuscule chance of snatching the crown from Que’s grip.

“All I need is to watch out for Nakajima,” said Que, who closed in on his second Anvaya crown. “Even if the rest would score low, I wouldn’t mind since they’re too far behind to contend.”

Nakajima drew level with Que when the 2008 Philippine Open champion opened up with a bogey, but couldn’t keep pace when Que found his rhythm and went five-under in the next four holes.

The 38-year-old Que canned a 40-foot eagle putt on the 332-yard No. 3 and drilled in a 20-footer after a 7-iron second shot from 160 yards on No. 10. —ROY LUARCA
