Far Eastern University-Diliman drew strength from guard LJ Gonzales to complete a sweep of National University, 81-73, and bag its first title in five years in the UAAP Season 79 juniors basketball tournament Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Gonzales, named Finals Most Valuable Player, sparked a late 15-4 run that gave the Baby Tamaraws a 75-67 lead heading into the final two minutes.
“Good thing he was able to recover,” FEU-Diliman coach Allan Albano said of Gonzales, who got into early foul trouble.
The Bullpups, who had hoped to win their fourth title in six seasons, last led, 63-60, on a Karl Peñano basket.
Gonzales had 12 points, six assists and three boards for the Baby Tams, who swept the best-of-three series for their first title since 2012.
