Grandmaster Julio Catalino Sadorra, International Master Oliver Dimakiling, and unheralded John Merill Jacutina won Monday night to climb to joint second in the Asian Zone 3.3 Chess Championships at Tagaytay International Convention Center.
The US-based Sadorra beat Indonesian Fide Master Pitra Andyka; Dimakiling trounced FM Roel Abelas; while Jacutina stunned Singaporean IM Goh Wei Ming Kevin in the third round.
The trio caught up with GM Joey Antonio and IM Paulo Bersamina, who drew their game, and seven others.
Singaporean FM Liu Xiangyi and Vietnamese GM Nguyen Huyn Minn Huy downed Vietnamese GM Dao Thien Hai and GM Rogelio Barcenilla, respectively, to catch Malaysian FM Li Tian Yiu on top at 2.5 points. —ROY LUARCA
