Chris Greatwich rejoins Azkals for Galaxy
MANILA, Philippines—Midfielder Chris Greatwich, one of the vital cogs in the Philippine Azkals’ historic run to the Suzuki Cup semifinals last year, will make his return to the national side when it faces the Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition match on Dec. 3 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium
The 28-year-old Greatwich, who scored goals against Singapore and Vietnam in the Suzuki Cup, will be playing for the Azkals for the first time since last December when they lost to Indonesia in the semifinals.
Greatwich missed the Azkals campaigns in the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers and the World Cup Qualifiers because of his coaching commitments in the United States.
“I’m looking forward to coming back and play for the team,” said Greatwich, who also plays club football for the New Jersey-based Morris County Colonials in the National Premiere Soccer League.
Defenders Rob Gier and Ray Jonsson are also expected to join the squad for the friendly against the Galaxy, one of the most high-profile clubs in Major League Soccer in the United States.
Galaxy president of business operations Tom Payne gave the assurance that their stars’ David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane will be playing.
Brothers Phil and James Younghusband welcomed Greatwich’s return to the squad.
“Chris has been a great influence in the team,” said James Younghusband.
Tickets have been pegged at P15,500, side bleachers at P2,000 and side lower and upper grandstand at P10,500.
