PSC-POC rift a catalyst for change

CEBU CITY—While most organizations consider friction as counterproductive, the Philippine Sports Commission sees the ongoing clash of principles with the Philippine Olympic Committee as a catalyst for change.

“Conflict is an opportunity because it gives us a clear line on the rules and functions of the PSC and the POC,” said PSC chair Butch Ramirez after the directional meeting with local officials from the Visayas to establish the National Physical Fitness and Sports Development Council.

The disharmony came when POC president Peping Cojuangco said the PSC should not meddle with the programs of the POC and its member national sports associations.

Ramirez made it clear that the PSC has the right to interfere under the law since government funding is being utilized to fuel those projects. “It’s really time for the NSAs to reform,” said Ramirez.
