Pick 5 sports, PSC tells local executives
NAGA CITY—The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) advised local government officials here to pick at least five sports where they expect to excel and eventually supply the athletes needed for the national team in overseas tournaments.
“Think of five sports that you feel could encourage people in your communities to get involved,” said PSC commissioner Arnold Agustin during the Sports Caravan attended by 47 mayors and sports leaders from the provinces and municipalities throughout the Bicol region.
Once they’ve identified these sports, PSC chief of staff and Sports Caravan project director Ronnel Abrenica said the agency would help the LGUs produce qualified coaches and discover athletes through the talent search program of the Philippine Sports Institute.
The Sports Caravan, which already traveled to Visayas and Mindanao, aims to revive Executive Orders 63 and 64 of former President Ramos for the creation of a National Physical Fitness and Sports Development Council.
