SEA Games: Philippine Canoe-kayak rowers flounder
EAST KARAWANG, West Java—Team Philippines floundered in the canoe-kayak events of the 26th Southeast Asian Games Friday morning at Lake Cipule here.
Danny Funelas finished dead last in the finals of the 1,000-meter canoe singles while the Generalo twins, Alex and Alvin, fared no better in their kayak events.
Thailand served notice of its bid to dominate the sport for the third straight Games, winning three of five gold medals staked.
Article continues after this advertisementFunelas finished 32 seconds behind champion Eka Octarorianus, who gifted host Indonesia with its first gold of the Games in four minutes and 16 seconds.
Checking in second five seconds off was Myanmar’s Win Htike with Van Long Tran of Vietnam taking the bronze (4:27.64).
The Generalo twins finished sixth out of seven entries in the 1,000-meter kayak doubles, clocking 3:55.02, 26 seconds behind the victorious Thai pair of Piyaphan Phaophat and Nathaworn Waenphro.
