Members of the men’s and women’s national volleyball pool fight for their slots to the final squads for the coming Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur—and they will do it via an exhibition match.
The event is dubbed “Clash of Heroes” and it will be held on April 28 at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“This is going to be a very crucial event as it serves as the basis of our coaches in choosing the 18 members of the team who would be sent to foreign training next month in Japan and probably in Korea,” said Peter Cayco during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Golden Phoenix Hotel.
Cayco, the acting president of the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc., said national coaches Sammy Acaylar of the men’s squad and Francis Vicente of the women’s would delegate the chores to their assistant coaches during the exhibition matches for them to focus on the performances of their players.
Among the stars expected to suit up are Alyssa Valdez, Mika Reyes, Rachel Daquis, Kim Dy, Kim Fajardo, Jaja Santiago, Myla Pablo and Grethcel Soltones.
“This is our way to present the team to the public. They are no longer carrying their university or club teams, they’re now representing our country,” said Cayco.
