SAN JOSE, ANTIQUE—Perennial champion National Capital Region hinted of things to come even before the formal opener of the 60th Palarong Pambansa here.

Led by gymnasts Divina Sembrano and 9-year-old Karl Eldrew Yulo, the highly favored bets from Metro Manila seized six gold medals at Binarayan Sports Complex Gym ahead of the opening rites Sunday attended by President Duterte.

Yulo snatched the first gold of the week-long Games for elementary and high school athletes by topping the cluster 1 individual all-around event of artistic gymnastics for grade school boys.

The younger brother of national team mainstay Carlos ruled the vault, mushroom and floor exercise events to propel NCR, overall champion in the last 12 editions, to the team gold (92.55 points) with Renz Castillo and Joseph Reynado.
