Prime prospect Peter Tyler Po stunned top seed Rupert Zaragosa then downed defending champion Noel Langamin to forge a finals duel with second-ranked Jolo Magcalayo in the Philippine Amateur Open Match Play Golf Championship at Orchard Golf and Country Club’s Player Thursday.
The No. 9 seed Po birdied No. 15 to move ahead, then pounced on Zaragosa’s woes on No. 17 to seal a 2&1 victory in the morning quarterfinals before ousting Langamin, 3&2, in the afternoon semifinals.
Magcalayo beat Aniceto Mandanas, 2&1, in the round of eight and Luis Castro, 5&4, in the Final Four to seal the 36-hole battle with Po, a student of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
Yuka Saso ripped Korean Yang Ju Young, 5&3, in the quarterfinals before trouncing Kayla Nocum, 4&2, in the semifinals. She will face Harmie Constantino in the premier match play event sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation. Constantino routed Alex Etter, 7&5, and Kristine Torralba, 5&4. —ROY LUARCA
