Ahomiro, Gervacio team up to help Perlas beat Valdez-led Creamline
Perlas shook off a slow start and proceeded to take down Creamline in the ensuing three sets for a 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-21, in the Premier Volleyball League Sunday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Amy Ahomiro and Dzi Gervacio finished with 17 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Perlas and counter the offensive production of Creamline’s Alyssa Valdez, who had a game-high 25 points.
Article continues after this advertisementPerlas had a less productive offense than Creamline with the winners scoring on just 35 spikes while the Cool Smashers had 50.
It was in Perlas’ careful system, though, where it relied on for the win as it committed just 24 errors compared to Creamline’s 46.
Skipper Dzi Gervacio said they had to balance out their offense if they wanted to put up a counter attack against the relentless Valdez, who had 55 attempts at the net.
Article continues after this advertisement“As much as possible we want equal distribution of attack points and reception,” said Gervacio who struck Valdez in the face with her spike in the first set with Perlas leading 13-8. “Volleyball is a team sport and as much as possible we want everyone to contribute. And if we get a star player like Kiwi [Amy Ahomiro] who becomes the no. 1 attacker or blocker, why not?”
Former University of the Philippines stalwarts Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon played the supporting role this time for Perlas as they had nine and seven points, respectively.
Valdez’ prime supporter was veteran Pau Soriano, who had 10 points.
