Singapore to host 2015 Games – report

SINGAPORE – Singapore will host the biennial Southeast Asian Games in 2015 after competition organizers agreed to hand the regional showpiece to the city-state after a 22-year absence, according to a report.

The SEA Games Federation agreed late Saturday to award the 28th edition of the competition to Singapore, the Singapore Straits Times reported, paving the way for the construction of a long-awaited new sports hub.

The city-state was slated to host the 2013 Games but it withdrew from the race because of delays in building the sports hub.

The Federation met in the Indonesian city of Palembang — which is currently co-hosting the 2011 Games with Jakarta.

After two-and-a-half days, Indonesia leads the medals table with 29 golds and an overall haul of 63 medals, well ahead of second-placed Singapore who have nine golds.

Military-ruled Myanmar said it will host the 2013 Games, marking the first time in four decades that the competition has been held in the nation.
