James Yap has just upped his legend status in the PBA.
On Friday, the Rain or Shine swingman passed Freddie Hubalde for the 14th place in the PBA all-time scoring list.
Yap surpassed Hubalde’s 9,927-point total at the 7:11 mark of the fourth quarter during the Elasto Painters game against Ginebra at Cuneta Astrodome in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The longtime face of the Purefoods franchise drilled two free throws for his 9,929th points.
“Actually I never thought of the record, all I wanted to do was play the game,” said Yap after they beat the Gin Kings 118-112 and improve to 5-4 in the standings. “Because the more you think about it, you won’t be able to shoot properly because you’re after the points.”
“My goal today was just to help the team win, it doesn’t matter how many points I get.”
Yap is now averaging 11.44 points a game in the conference and if that mark continues he might as well reach the 10,000 mark in the Governors’ Cup. /atm
