Jose Rizal Unversity bounced back from its debilitating loss to Lyceum and held back University of Perpetual Help, 70-56, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup Friday at the tournament’s namesake arena in San Juan.

The Heavy Bombers improved to 4-1 with their lone loss coming against the Pirates, 95-87, last May 22 that saw their three-game win streak stopped.

JRU head coach Vergel Meneses said their loss against the Pirates was a wakeup call for his team who got a bit complacent after defeating reigning UAAP champions La Salle, 95-81, in the opener.

“This is a wakeup call for us because they started to think that they can beat anyone, we beat the no.1 collegiate team in the Philippines,” said Meneses as they settled for the second spot in Group B. “They thought that every game will be the same.”

Ervin Grospe also finished in double digits for the Heavy Bombers as he put up 12 points and five rebounds.

Genmar Ylagan had 13 points to lead the 2-3 Altas.
