What started as a promising campaign in the 2017 AFC Cup ended in heartbreak for Global Cebu Tuesday night at Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Reduced to 10 men in the second half, Global conceded twice in the final four minutes in a 2-3 defeat to S-League side Home United in the second leg of their Asean zonal semifinal tie.
The result meant Global crashed out of the competition, 4-5, on aggregate, as another red card on a key player cost the Cebu side its slim advantage.
Global had led for most of the two-legged affair and looked poised to claim a finals berth when Shu Sasaki’s header in the 49th minute put them on top, 2-1.
But Home United capitalized on the 71st minute dismissal of Dennis Villanueva to tie the count in the 89th minute, when Stipe Plazibat stabbed home at close range past Patrick Deyto.
