Lyceum advanced to the semifinals of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup after eliminating San Sebastian, 86-71, in the quarterfinals Wednesday at the tournament’s namesake arena in San Juan.
The Pirates used their torrid shooting from distance to effectively dispatch the Stags as they shot the ball 33 percent from beyond the arc, 12-of-36.
Spencer Pretta was the prime marksman for Lyceum hitting five three-pointers en route to a game-high 17 points.
Lyceum head coach Topex Robinson said it’s his mutual trust with Pretta that gave him confidence to allow his student to shoot at such a high clip.
“He told me that he’s ready and he’s just that confident, that’s about it,” said Robinson of Pretta who’s a former Stag. “He knows that when he’s open, I don’t even know how he gets open, and he’s going to take the shot.”
And while the Pirates shot the lights out from their end of the floor, they also defended prevented the Stags from doing the same to them.
San Sebastian shot a paltry 39 percent, 28-of-72, from the field.
CJ Perez filled up the stat sheets for Lyceum putting up 14 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.
Alfren Gayosa led San Sebastian with 14 points.
