Global Cebu leaned on goalkeeper Patrick Deyto’s heroics to stun Singaporean side Geylang, 3-2, on penalties on Wednesday night in the preliminary round of the Singapore Cup at Jalan Besar Stadium.
After regulation and extra time ended in a 4-4 stalemate, Deyto made two excellent saves in the shootout to help the Philippines Football League side reach the quarterfinal round slated in August.
Daryl Roberts produced a hat trick for Global, before assisting on OJ Clarino’s goal that gave Global a 4-2 lead with 16 minutes remaining.
But the Cebuanos once again conceded twice late in the match with Gabriel Quak converting from the spot after Faritz Hameed was fouled by Roberts in the box, before Ricardo Sendra slotted home from close-range in stoppage time.
In the shootout, Deyto, whose form has been scrutinized lately, sparkled by stopping spot kicks from Faritz and Sendra.
“There were chances for both sides to score in extra time and nobody could, so it was only fair that the match was decided on penalties,” said Global’s Singaporean coach Akbar Nawas.
Meanwhile, Ceres-Negros absorbed a stunning 0-1 loss to Hougang United last Tuesday night, sending the Busmen crashing out of contention.
