MANILA, Philippines—Six gold medals fell in the hands of the Philippines in day five of the 26th Southeast Asian Games Tuesday in Indonesia.
As of 7 p.m., the Philippines has a 14-18-24 (gold, silver, bronze) medal haul but is still at sixth place.
The Philippines’ taekwondo delegation bore two gold medals courtesy of Japoy Lizardo in the men’s flyweight and Kristie Alora in the women’s heavyweight division.
The 25-year-old Lizardo escaped with a victory versus Thai Jerranat Nakaviroj while the 21-year-old Alora nipped Eka Sahara of Indonesia.
Jason Balabal and Iris Ranola also delivered gold in their respective events.
Balabal topped the 87kg Greco Roman wrestling tie while Ranola reigned in the women’s 8-ball tournament, after another top pool bet Rubilen Amit bowed out.
In fencing, SEA Games champion Walbert Mendoza struck with another gold in the men’s individual sabre.
Frederick Ong, who also delivered a medal for the country in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, also finished first in the men’s singles bowling, while Jeremy Posadas claimed silver in the same event.
Philippine men’s tennis squad suffered a big blow versus Indonesia and settled for silver in men’s team meet.
Ronald Perena and Nerlyn Huinda both finished with bronzes in the Pencak Silat competition while the George Lui and Lloyd Rey also took home a bronze in the cycling 68.5 km men’s team trial.
