Generika-Ayala made sure it won’t end up in eighth place Saturday night, coming up with a 25-19, 25-11, 23-25, 25-17 win over lowly newcomer Cherrylume to salvage some measure of pride in the Philippine Superliga All Filipino Conference at La Salle Sentrum in Lipa City.
Fiola Ceballos topscored with 15 points for the Lifesavers who toyed with the Iron Ladies by sending in their second stringers and almost paid for it.
“Only the pride is at stake here because we don’t want to finish last place,” said Ceballos.
Sta. Lucia and Cocolife are still clashing for fifth place at press time.
Generika-Ayala unloaded 56 attacks points against Cherrylume’s 31 en route to grabbing seventh spot, but was not that much ahead in blocks (5-4) and aces (10-7).
After posting a two-sets-to-none lead, Generika-Ayala employed its bench players and nearly watched the gambit blow up in its face as Cherrylume stormed ahead, 10-5, to eventually steal the set away.
The Lifesavers actually committed more errors, 30-27, against the Iron Ladies, whose core is made up of University of the East players in the UAAP.
