The Philippine Blu Girls battled back from 2-6 down in the fifth inning and upended No. 10 Mexico for the second straight day, hacking out an 8-7 decision in eight innings to clinch seventh place in the World Cup of Softball XII in Oklahoma on Sunday.
Francesca Altomonte, who anchored the Filipinos’ 4-2 conquest of the Mexicans in the group stage Saturday, delivered again, earning a walk-off single that gave the 17th-ranked Team PH back-to-back wins over Mexico.
Mexico wound up last in the eight-team tournament ruled by world number 1 Japan, which edged the US, 2-1, in the finals.
“With every tournament, they’re getting better,” said softball association and Cebuana Lhuillier chief Jean Henri Lhuillier.
The Blu Girls will next see action in the Women’s Softball World Championship in Canada on July 15 to 24.
